Why Is Oppenheimer Rated R?
Christopher Nolan’s every film is a visual and technical treat. From Memento to Interstellar, the visionary director’s stories pack a punch. Now, three years after Tenet, he’s coming to theaters with the life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Starring Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., and more, Oppenheimer is ready to deliver an atom bomb to the box office this year.
But there’s something different this time, and it isn’t just the wildly realistic and yet terrifying subject matter. The film is reportedly clocking in at about 3 hours, making it Nolan’s lengthiest project yet. Also, the Imax film’s footage stretches 11 miles long and weighs 600 pounds. But that’s not all.
The Hollywood Reporter published that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has been rated R (Restricted) by the Motion Picture Association film rating system. It’s the first film since Insomnia (2002) in the director’s career to bag this rating. The movie had been assigned an R for nudity, language, and some sexuality.
Why Is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer Rated R?
Oppenheimer has become the first Christopher Nolan film ever since 2002’s Insomnia to land an R (Restricted) rating from the MPA film rating system, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. So Oppenheimer is the first time in two decades to have bagged this rating for Nolan. Also, it needs to be remembered that even Memento (2000) was rated R.
Every other film directed by Nolan- for example, Inception, Interstellar, and even the Dark Knight trilogy, all had a PG-13 rating. Nolan edited the Dark Knight trilogy and Dunkirk to ensure a PG-13 rating. As such, it’s surprising that Universal Pictures isn’t making any cuts to the film.
Variety has reported that Oppenheimer has got such a rating for “some sexuality, nudity, and language.” It will be interesting to see how this sensitive content gets depicted on-screen. However, the rating certainly implies something about the subject matter and how it has been handled. So anyone above 17 years of age will have to be escorted by an adult guardian or parent.
Oppenheimer Is Going to Be Epic
In an interview with Total Film, Christopher Nolan revealed that J. Robert Oppenheimer, often credited with the creation of the atomic bomb, was “the most important person who ever lived. He made the world we live in — for better or for worse.” The director also said that he wanted to give the man the scale he deserved.
However, doing so wasn’t easy. Nolan said:
“It’s a story of immense scope and scale, and one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever taken on in terms of the scale of it, and in terms of encountering the breadth of Oppenheimer’s story. There were big logistical challenges, big practical challenges.”
Nolan was even able to simulate the Trinity Test on-screen. As such, it’s a film that will perhaps blow viewers away in more ways than one. However, Oppenheimer will not have free reign over the box office.
Not only is it releasing with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, but also just a week after Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible 7. As such, the box office fight will be one to watch out for.
Oppenheimer will get released on July 21, 2023, in theaters.
What do you think about Oppenheimer’s R rating?
Did Christopher Nolan take a huge risk by alienating a significant portion of the theater-going audience? Or was it the right decision because serving the story comes first? Moreover, who will win the box office fight between the three heavyweight films?
