Tess Gunty Biography:-

Tess was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. She has a B.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame, with a concentration in creative writing. She studied French language and culture at l’Université Catholique de l’Ouest in Angers, France, during her second year of college. Back at Notre Dame, Tess worked at the University Writing Center as a tutor for undergrads, grads, and faculty. The ND Theater Now Award went to her play Taxidermy. During Tess’s senior year, the English Department put her up for four awards. The Ernest Sandeen Award went to her book of poems, Radish Beds.

After she graduated in 2015, she went to NYU as a Lillian Vernon Fellow to get an MFA in creative writing. Tess taught undergraduates how to write creatively at NYU, helped organize the Emerging Writers Reading Series, and got a graduate research fellowship to work on her novel in Paris. During graduate school, she worked as a mentor at Still Waters in a Storm, a place in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where kids can go to read and write. Tess worked with her old professor Jonathan Safran Foer after she got her MFA. She did research and writing for his nonfiction book about the climate crisis. We Are the Weather came out in 2019 from FSG.

As a freelance writer, editor, and research assistant, Tess has written about the history of the Notre Dame Center for Social Concerns, contributed a history of Westside, Atlanta to an urban revitalization plan by Thadani Architects + Urbanists, made science content for the American Museum of Natural History, and edited Bruce Rits Gilbert’s debut book, John Prine, One Song at a Time, a tribute to the folk musician written after Prine’s death.

In 2021, the publishing companies Knopf (North America), Éditions Gallmeister (France), Guanda (Italy), and Kiepenheuer & Witsch (Germany) bought the rights to Tess’s first book, The Rabbit Hutch, and her second book, Honeydew. At an auction, Oneworld (UK) won the rights to both of these books.

Tess moved to Los Angeles recently. Duvall Osteen, who works at Aragi Inc., is her agent.
