A fun day on the river turned dangerous when a man jumped off a bridge and landed directly on a young woman floating below.

“Imagine the worst punch in the gut you ever got by a guy who was falling from a distance of maybe twenty feet who was 250 pounds. And he landed possibly feet first right into your stomach. That’s a lot of pain,” said Heidi Cook, mother of the 19-year-old victim, Cienna Cook.

Cienna was out for what was meant to be a fun day floating the Boise River Sunday, when she says a large adult man jumped from the Baybrook bridge and landed directly on her abdomen.

According to Heidi, the jumper apologized, then ran away, leaving her daughter unable to walk or catch a breath in the river.

“I believe it’s a criminal action whether he hurt her or not,” Heidi said.

Luckily, nearby floaters were able to pull the 19-year-old BSU student to the shore and call 911.

“I guess it was a large group of guys and it was their idea of fun, to pick people as they were going down and they would just jump down and try and get as close to them as they could,” Heidi said.

Heidi says Cienna was taken to a local hospital where she is currently being treated for internal bleeding.

“That’s a very dangerous situation. She could have died in ways other than drowning. She could have had her organs rupture she could have had more internal bleeding and died,” Heidi said.

She could face surgery – and at the very least – two more nights in a hospital bed.

“Well there’s kind of two victims to the scenario. There’s my daughter, but also the financial element to it makes you feel like the victim too. And then you have to fork out a whole bunch of money for some guy’s cheap thrill and end up hurting everybody.”

Heidi Cook says she would like to see the anonymous young man come forward and face charges.

According to Boise Police, no charges have been filed.

The Cooks ask for anyone who might have more information on what happened or on the young man who jumped to come forward.

Friends and family members have started a GoFundMe page to help with medical costs.

Jumping from bridges into the river is legal in the city, as long as the jumper lands 50 feet away from any floaters.
