Descendants 2 Was Everything We Needed In a Disney Channel Original Movie Sequel Celeb Sec

Publish date: 2024-07-13

If you’re reading this, it’s likely for one out of two reasons. It’s possible that you just finished watching the world premiere of the new Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants 2 and you have some pressing thoughts you want to discuss with a fellow fanatic who knows exactly what’s racing through your mind; or, you haven’t seen the film yet and you are waiting for someone to convince you to give it a watch. Luckily, you’ve landed in the right place no matter what your reasons are.

Descendants 2 had one of the most highly-anticipated lead-ups and hype in DCOM history. It has been over a literal year since we first found out that the hugely popular Descendants was going to get its sequel. We tried to be patient as we watched the beloved cast share teasing behind-the-scenes photos during filming, and add incredibly talented actors to its ensemble (both Disney legends like China Anne McClain and relative newcomers like Dylan Playfair and Thomas Doherty.) The fandom came together and wished for a bigger budget production, more impressive song and dance numbers than we’ve ever seen before, and plot lines that cater to the film’s diverse fan age while remaining family-friendly and fun.

And now that the movie is finally out there in the universe, and I’ll officially call it: the fandom got the sequel we deserved. And I’ll try not to spoil anything for you.

Mal and Ben shippers have waited for ages to see how Dove Cameron and Mitchell Hope‘s characters’ relationship would play out: would their romance get their fairy tale ending, or would their differences ultimately tear them apart? I won’t spoil it for anyone, but I will say that the couple’s story line in this film was one of the most realistic interpretations you could expect from Disney royalty, but that doesn’t mean it had to lose any of its magic.

Personally, I also had extremely high hopes for China’s character Uma and her band of villainous pirates going into watching the movie, and they completely delivered. Dance numbers like “What’s My Name?” not only proved these actors’ individual talents, but was a worldwide reminder of how director Kenny Ortega produces memorable and iconic scenes that last with us from childhood and beyond.

Mega-hit in the making “Chillin’ Like a Villain” isn’t just a great song, but its movie scene offered up a moment I really wanted to see happen after the original movie: two of my favorite dancers in the cast, Sofia Carson and Cameron Boyce, really getting the opportunity to showcase Evie and Carlos‘ dance moves.

Plus, we got to see some more characters who were underrated in D1 (like Dianne Doan‘s Lonnie and Brenna D’Amico‘s Jane) get their fabulous moments in the spotlight, and I love the way they were able to share their stories through experiences viewers could really relate to.

Now, not all of the questions I had going into D2 were answered throughout the course of the film, and I accrued plenty knew ones while watching.

Enough so that I know I’m not the only one asking if we can expect Descendants 3 on Disney’s horizon. But as the credits rolled, I started jotting down notes on things to look out for when I undoubtedly watch the movie all over again tomorrow. I felt satisfied and excited, which is the most Disney of combinations around.
